Sources of Our Medical school on Don originate in the XX-th century when in 1915 on the basis of the Warsaw Russian University the Medical Faculty was created. In 1920 The first release of 295 doctors has taken place. In 1930 The faculty is transformed to Medical institute, and in the subsequent in the Rostov State Medical Institute.

In 1980 for merits in business of a professional training not only for our country, but also for more than 60 countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America the medical institute has been awarded by an award of Friendship of the people. In 1994 the Medical institute is transformed in Rostov State Medical University which is the largest base educational, scientific and medical centre in the south of Russia.

Now at university 11 faculties and the medical college, carrying out preparation under programs of average and higher vocational training function, the versatile clinic, scientific research institutes, centres of science and problem laboratories, extends the international cooperation with the research centres and high schools of near and far abroad, forms and methods професионального and general educational training of students, young scientists and doctors are constantly improved.

In RostSMU annually trained more than 5000 students and 7000 listeners - at faculty of improvement of professional skill and professional retraining of experts; annually above 650 persons are trained in internship, and postgraduate study. On the basis of university the coordination council on postdegree additionally training the Southern Federal district functions. In 2008  the educational military centre for contract preparation of students for the purpose of service under the contract in ranks of the army of the Russian Federation on officer posts after the high school termination is created.

At university 91 chair on which 800 persons working in faculty work, from them more than 130 doctors of sciences, professors, about 500 candidates of sciences functions. At university 1 academician and 3 member-correspondents of the Russian academy of medical sciences are engaged in research and clinical activity. 52 professors are members of other Russian and international academies, 9 employees are Honored workers of a science of the Russian Federation, 26 - the Deserved doctors of the Russian Federation and 10 - the Deserved workers of the higher school of the Russian Federation.
