Crystals form when the liquid rock from inside the earth cool and harden. When a minute crystal is first formed it attracts additional constituent material from its environment, enlarging itself. Larger crystals will grow from an increase in time at the temperature range of crystallization.Crystallization is basically a chemical separation of liquids and solids. It begins with nucleation, which is when the absorbed molecules begin to cluster up and attempt to become stable. If the stabilization doesn't occur, those clustered molecules become reabsorbed into the liquid. This repeats over and over as long as there is a consistent temperature and supersaturation--that is, there are more molecules than the liquid they were absorbed in. The largest crystals can be over 11 meters long, and can weigh more than 55 tons.
The crystals formed when the caverns were completely filled with hot water (warmer than 50 degrees c) supersaturated with gypsum for very long periods of time. The estimated growth rate, is 1.5 mm per 1000 years, which means that the longest crystals took more than 500,000 years to form.Despite their growing popularity, don't worry about running out of crystals.
